Cheer FundamentalsSports & ActivitiesThis fun and energetic cheer program introduces athletes to the fundamentals of cheerleading in a positive and supportive environment. Participants will learn a variety of cheers while developing body control, jumping technique, coordination and proper hand movements. Co-Ed Intramural BasketballSports & ActivitiesLove basketball and want to play for fun? Grab your friends and join us as we compete against one another for the championship. Basketball teams must have a minimum of four players and a maximum of six players. Teams must provide their own basketball. All subs must register online. If you are planning to try out for the basketball team, this program is not for you. Meets ten times. All teammates must register individually. No subs are allowed on the final night. FencingSports & ActivitiesGrades 2-5New and returning students are invited to join this fast-growing Olympic sport. Hall of Fame Olympic Fencing Coach, Ro Sobalvarro, crafts all lessons and curriculum that is used to train the instructors. Students pair up and practice a fencing move or concept, rotate partners, and repeat. Students are then asked to mock-fence using only the moves taught thus far. Safety is the first priority! We supply safety swords, protective masks, chest plates and jackets, and we practice in a high octane, inclusive environment. Wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes (no sandals). Shakopee Kids Running ClubSports & ActivitiesThe Shakopee Kids Running Club is a fun and active program for students in grades 3–8 who enjoy running, being active, and having fun with friends! This program is designed for all ability levels, whether your child is an experienced runner or simply has lots of energy and enjoys being active outdoors. Participants will be introduced to the sport of cross country through fun running activities, games, and short workouts led by Shakopee High School cross country athletes and coaches. Each week will include a mix of movement, teamwork, and encouragement in a positive and welcoming environment. The program will also include weekly one-mile fun runs/races held on school grounds where participants can challenge themselves, cheer on teammates, and experience the excitement of race day in a supportive setting. The goal of the Shakopee Kids Running Club is to help kids build confidence, stay active, develop healthy habits, and discover that running can be fun! Shakopee Young AthletesSports & ActivitiesYoung Athletes is an innovative sports play program that introduces children ages 2 - 7, with and without intellectual disabilities, to the world of sports. There is no better way to introduce children to the Special Olympics community than through Young Athletes, fostering inclusion in a fun and engaging setting for all. Young Athletes uses the Special Olympics sport and play curriculum and introduces basic gross motor skills like running, kicking and throwing. This program will take place in the gym at Pearson Early Learning Center and will be led by trained Special Olympics volunteers. Parents/guardians are encouraged to be in attendance as observers and to support participation as needed. Meets seven times. Scholarships through Special Olympics MN and fee assistance through the school district are available.
